Horizon

This image came from a simple impulse: I wanted to bottle up some warmth to bring back inside with me.

I set the shutter as slow as I could manage without overexposing. In the process, I learned that my camera's aperture can only close down to an f8. So with the shutter speed locked at 1/30, the camera had to move pretty fast to get the painterly lines that I was after. I find that sharp motion thins the scene, minimizing detail and emphasizing texture and contrast.

The sun was setting to the right of the frame, introducing an orange glow. I masked in the subtle shifts to the rest of the hues across the horizon, and the result was a magical eeriness both beautiful and uninviting.
