The Weeper

In Greek mythology, Niobe, queen of Thebes, became an archetypal figure of tragic grief after boasting of her fourteen children and deriding the goddess Leto for having borne only two.

In response to this act of hubris, Leto’s children, Apollo and Artemis, slew Niobe’s sons and daughters. Stricken by overwhelming sorrow, Niobe withdrew into perpetual mourning.

Zeus transformed her into stone on Mount Sipylus as punishment for her hubris. Yet even in her petrified form she continued to weep,

her tears flowing eternally.
