About the Work
Atop Masada features a silhouetted blackbird perched upon the ancient fortress of Masada in the Judean Desert. In a region that only receives an inch or two of rain each year, this photograph depicts that rare event as evidenced by the moisture gathered in the rays of light breaking through the parting clouds. In an extremely rare convergence of nature, weather, and light, this image was created.
The meaning of this work is revealed through its medium: film. In this instance, color film functions as an act of preservation, a literal stealing of the light from a fleeting and improbable moment.
